Plans for new museum well received

Museum supporters and local residents gave a warm welcome to the emerging plans for a new museum for Malton and Norton

A public meeting held at St Michael’s Church, Malton gave people the chance to view concept sketches for a new museum, and provided a further opportunity for the public to contribute ideas about how a new museum might look and how its internal spaces might be used to provide display areas, meeting spaces for local community groups and exhibition rooms for local makers and creators.

Sketch designs have been prepared by award winning local architect Tom Brooksbank who explained, “The design for the new Malton Museum draws inspiration from local history, creating a bold new civic building on the marketplace. It blends traditional materials like brick and timber with modern elements such as floor-to-ceiling windows.  The central arch and gable ends, along with the pitched roofline, recall the Roman fort and Malton’s historic architecture.”

Although the front of the building is Grade II listed, the rear of the building is not, providing an opportunity to create a new space for the museum. Historic England’s National Heritage List states that the “much altered and extended brick-built rear range is not included in the listing”.

Furthermore, the list entry emphasises that “particularly the later C19 and C20 extensions and outbuildings, are not to be treated as part of the listed building”.

The proposed first floor layout can be viewed here.

The front of the building is Grade II listed and will be conserved. It features a very special inglenook fireplace and 12th century stonework which will be carefully preserved. The Fleece operated as an inn form at least 1823 and has been an important part of Malton’s history.

The original building amalgamated three old burgage plots and this has influenced the approach to the design of the rear of the building featured below.

The rear of the building is not listed and provides an important opportunity to create exciting new spaces and display areas as well as potential workspaces for local business and crafts people.

Museum chair Phil Crabtree commented, “It was wonderful to see so many interested people at the public presentation, and to share Tom Brooksbank’s exciting concept designs for a new Malton Museum. It’s important to stress that the museum’s overall design is still very much at the drawing board phase. We are keen to hear suggestions from all members of our local community as to what our new museum needs, and do urge people to get in touch with their thoughts.”
